Sharon Twitty, also known by her stage name Miss Twitty, was born and raised in Washington, DC. In 2001, she graduated from Barbizon at the age of 17. She has taken the industry by storm as a signed plus and print model, an actress and a radio host. Having hosted a TV Show, walked in over 20 runways shows, produced and hosted her own radio show as well as other modeling and acting work, Miss Twitty is creating her own success through hard work and her many talents. Currently, she is represented by two managers and took the time to catch us up on all of her exciting successes!

First things first, can you tell us about your Barbizon experience?
Before Barbizon I was actively performing for a local youth organization called Metro TeenAIDS. The after school program there was fun and informative. They paid me to be in a group called New School Activist where we wrote skits, poems and raps and performed them in front of other teens to educate them on good health decisions. This really introduced me to my passion: performing. I was doing voice-over work for a teen show called “What’s the Deal Yo!” on a Hip Hop station (93.9 FM) when I remember telling my parents that I want to model! However, I knew absolutely nothing about the industry, what was required or how to get started.

My parents suggested Barbizon. My father paid for it and he takes much pride in doing so even today! Barbizon was a whole new world for me. I was in a classroom setting amongst other ambitious peers. I remember learning how to professionally apply makeup, different industry posing techniques, skin health, model etiquette and a plethora of other things. Most importantly, I learned the dos and don’ts in the industry. This professionally prepared me for success as a model. For years I used exactly what I learned from Barbizon and  it gave me an edge over my competition in every go-see.

How did you break into the industry?
I was discovered at the Barbizon Competition we had before graduation. The Director of Millennium Model Management was there and signed me to my first agency. I did a little work and then life happened and I got caught up in network marketing. I felt empty not performing or doing anything with my talents. It was in 2012 that I decided it’s time to make my passion a priority!

So tell us about the work you’ve been doing!
Since 2012, I have performed and graduated from Actors, Models and Talent for Christ (AMTC), I runway modeled three times for Harvey ‘Star’ Washington and modeled for DC Fashion Week in four cycles. Just recently I was asked to audition for a fifth cycle. I was a lead model in a hair show for Aveda Institute and won 2nd place in my category as a hair model for Glenn Jackson Golden Scissors Awards. I modeled for Le Bustiere Lingerie Boutique and modeled in the music video “Funky 5″ which made number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and competed on mtvU “The Freshmen.” I am 5’9″ and size 12 so I modeled as a plus model in all these gigs.

I have also done work as an actress, been in a radio commercial, and acted in an industrial for the U.S Postal Service. I radio host and I even hosted a TV Show on Bongo Boy TV. I hosted Season 5 Ep 1070. I am now signed to REACH Management and am also represented by Colby Management.

We heard you hosted a TV Show and currently host your own radio show – CONGRATULATIONS! Can you us more about that and where we can tune in?
Yes, in July 2014 I began co-hosting a show on Urban One’s Spirit 1340am. This is how I got my stage name “Miss Twitty.” I did very well and seven months later I was offered to host my own show. As of February 2015, I am the producer and host of “Prosper In Health” radio show. My show airs every 3rd Friday from 9pm to 9:30pm Eastern Standard Time. Tune in for your exciting health facts and discoveries from abs to zinc!

Do you have any advice, tips or tricks for Barbizon students and alumni pursuing a career in the industry?
Absolutely… treat it like a business! Invest in yourself. Going to modeling school was the best thing I ever did. It gave me all the knowledge I needed to get my foot in the door. Your talent will do the rest but you need an industry professional to get you in the door, to open that opportunity. If that casting director, agent, photographer, sponsor, producer etc. peeks through the door and sees you looking crazy and unprepared they will shut the door. 

That is the reality of this industry. Just like in business, the more you invest in beautifying your business, the more people you will attract. In entertainment, the more you invest in preparation, the more attractive you look when the decision maker considers you. To whom much is given much is required. What is required may cost extra time, energy and money. Treat it like a business.

If someone were to ask me, “Mr. Arthur, what do you know for sure?” I would have to answer, “What I know for sure is, confidence is the foundation and key to all success.” Not only has it been a platform in my success, but it has been the driving force of why many of us work in this industry. So, why is confidence so important to all of us at Barbizon? Mainly because confidence is something our students will gain by going through the modeling, acting and personal development program. Gaining confidence at a young age is one of life’s greatest treasures. The more we understand ourselves while we are young, the better quality of life we can have as adults.  Why go through life lacking self-knowledge and self-worth?

Here are 5 simple ways we can gain confidence in ourselves.  

1. Allow yourself to know that you are important.  Speaking words out loud and allowing yourself to believe these ideas is a great way to start.  For example, “I am beautiful.” “I am fierce.” “I am worth it.”  After a while, you will start to see yourself in a different light.  When you want to be greater you have to see it and believe it.  Choose five positive adjectives that you want to possess and say them out loud starting with the words “I am…”.   
2. Stop comparing yourself to others.  When we are born, we each possess many different unique traits that makes us special.  Some of us are artistic, while some are very good with numbers.  The beauty of understanding your uniqueness will eventually show you your niche.   No one in this world is exactly same so be thankful for that.  If we were all exact copies of each other then this world would be bland.  Embrace what makes you, you.  
3. Focus on the things you can change.  Everyone can grow to be a little more grateful, a little more humble, and a little more giving.  It’s amazing how much happiness flows into your life just by helping others.  Changing yourself for the better will also make you a role model.   
4. Celebrate the small triumphs.  If you want to gain more confidence, you have to start with small accomplishments first before trying to conquer the greater ones.  
5. Go and surround yourself with positive people.  When you surround yourself with people who are authentically optimistic, you will quickly start to see a shift in your own perception.  

There is only one way to gain confidence and it’s to do the actual work. It takes lots of practice to gain these skills. Unfortunately, you cannot go to the grocery store and buy it, but fortunately you have the opportunity to actually take the time and put in the manual work. The more confidence we build in ourselves, the more we can become walking examples of it. 

If someone were to also ask me, “Mr. Arthur, what else do you know for sure?” I would confidently answer, “I know that I believe in what we do at Barbizon and the amount of lives we can change for the better together.”

Leah Graifer was 17 and when she walked by a sign for Barbizon Modeling and Acting in her local mall. She had been looking for a new hobby after being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease at age 12 which forced her to quit dancing. 

“I needed something new and I still loved being on stage,” Leah shared.

Fast forward to the spring of 2015, Leah graduated from Barbizon in Fairfax, VA. Did Barbizon turn out to be that something new she needed? We sat down with Leah to find out.

How was your Barbizon experience?
When I started Barbizon I had a lot of anxiety from kids at school teasing me about being sick and missing school. Before that I was a confident little girl. My classes gave me a safe place to rebuild my confidence. I quickly decided that I wanted to continue pursuing modeling after I graduated. Barbizon gave me all the information I needed to safely and confidently enter the industry.

What steps did you take after graduating from Barbizon?
I immediately went to Barbizon’s DC Competition 2015 and was given a scholarship to The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts (for film acting) where I spent a year. I didn’t even know that I liked acting before my Barbizon classes.

I sent out comp cards to several agents and managers up and down the east coast with Barbizon’s guidance through a placement list.

In 2016, I did a second Barbizon DC Competition and attended Passport to Discovery (PTD). This time, I received a scholarship to the Atlantic Theater Company summer program. I won Miss Plus Top Model 2018 on PTD 2017 and signed with 2 agents and a manager after PTD.

What work have you done in the industry?
I did a hair show for Paul Mitchell in May 2017. I take private acting classes with Joshua LeBar Studios and Thrive Equestrian riding on camera for actors.

My manager is Webb Sweeney Murphy (WSM Talent) from Boston. I am also signed with Katalyst and Liquid Talent. I am hoping to sign with a few more who showed interest in me later this year.

I am a plus size influencer on Instagram and am working towards booking more modeling work.

I met a producer named Bill Herndon on PTD 2017 who gave me a supporting role on a new TV series called 7 Hills.

I am always taking acting classes and watching other models because there is always more to learn.

What has been your favorite project so far and what are your goals for the future?
I have been enjoying collaborating with Fashion Nova Curve on Instagram and I am hoping there will be more 7 Hills to film soon. I want to continue encouraging people of every age, shape, and size to be confident and body positive! I am hoping I will start start booking more print and commercial work soon.

Any advice for current Barbizon students and graduates?
Keep pushing forward because you can achieve your dreams. Just work hard and be patient. Be friendly to everyone, but don’t forget to be yourself.

At 9 years old, Laynee Wilson graduated from Barbizon USA of Columbus, GA. Since her Barbizon graduation, Laynee has competed at the Atlanta Barbizon Competition, won a scholarship for acting school, and signed with BMG Models. We sat down with this rising model to learn about her time with Barbizon and how it has brought her so much industry experience.

First things first, can you tell us what your Barbizon classes were like?
I graduated from Barbizon of Columbus, GA when I was 9 years old. I learned how to do my favorite runway pose, the “H” pose! I learned how to express myself through fashion: if I wear blue, that means I am sad or trying something new, pink means I’m super happy, yellow means I’m trying my hardest. I also loved learning the five minute face and about moisturizing my face and skincare basics.

What did you gain from your Barbizon experience?
I was shy before the classes and nervous about making new friends. I learned to be confident and how to make new friends of all ages. Two classmates became really good friends, their ages are 20 and 10 1/2. I found that friends don’t have to be my age. A funny thing I got from the classes is learning to change my eating habits. Before the classes I was a child who loved eating very healthy and would chose a salad over popular kids food every chance I got. People thought I was crazy. When I learned about nutrition in the classes, I felt more happy about my eating habits. I was already eating like a model and I LOVE IT!

What has been your favorite thing about Barbizon?
All the teachers and all the friends I have. Miss Haley was the best teacher I have ever had. I learned about all the possible poses I can choose from and a serious face.

Congratulations on winning 2nd Winner Up at the 2017 Atlanta BCOMP! How was your Barbizon Competition experience?
Thank you! Being in the 2017 competition in Atlanta was “spectaculous”. I was freaked out at first but I could see my mom and everyone watching me being me, then it became super fun! My mom says the number one rule in modeling is to have fun! I also won a professional photo shoot. That was so awesome! I got so many callbacks that it felt unreal. It gave me experience and showed me I had potential. I was a real model. I knew I would be signing with an agency soon.

What have you been up to since the competition?
A few weeks ago Mercedes with Barbizon, invited me to go on some interviews in Atlanta with her and six other girls. I just signed a two year contract with BMG! BMG finds paying work in print and runway modeling and film acting. I did my win photo shoot in May and my pictures were unique and matched my personality. I loved the photo shoot, it was amazing and I felt fearless! I just got a one year scholarship for a film acting school in our new city, Huntsville, AL. We moved to Huntsville right after the Atlanta competition for more opportunities for my whole family. My new school has a fun acting club that I love being in. I will be in the club again this next year. Here in Huntsville I auditioned for the 30th Annual Barbizon Competition in Florida. I won a spot and I am already registered. Miss Jamie already knew who I was and it made me feel impressed and a little famous!

You’re competing again this year at the 30th Annual Barbizon Competition in December, what are you most excited about for this year’s competition?
I’m excited to have the chance to improve my runway skills in front of judges and a room full of people. I get to be myself again on the runway, that makes me feel free. I am also excited to see how many callbacks I get again, to show me and others I am a serious model. I am really excited to see if I can win anymore prizes this year.

Is there anything you would like to say to your Barbizon staff?
I want to tell Barbizon staff, YOU’RE AWESOME! You gave me the best teachers and experiences ever. Barbizon is part of our family now! Hopefully we can get classes in Huntsville! Thank you for seeing me in the Columbus, GA mall and seeing the model in me, even though I was only 8 years old. They did not know, me and my parents had just talked about me being a model one day so I could reach my life dream. I want to be a WWE female wrestler. Most start out as a model or actress, so they can walk their entrance to the ring (like Nikki Bella). We didn’t really know how to get this dream started. Barbizon saw me and called me to the table at the mall. I have been living my dream because of you! I want to thank everyone at Barbizon for helping my mom figure out how to help me reach my dreams!

“Everything happened so quickly after graduating and I am so grateful it did because it helped develop my skills on learning how to manage working with Barbizon as well as my full time job and school all at once,” shared Brittany Anderson.

Brittany graduated from Barbizon in December 2017 in Kansas City. After graduating, Brittany booked promotional modeling jobs through Barbizon and was selected to compete in the Dallas Barbizon Competition. She went on to sign with Katalyst Talent Agency and Images Model and Talent Agency in St. Louis. Here’s Brittany’s Barbizon Story.

What were your Barbizon classes like?
With a director as cool as Miss Savannah, our classes were exciting and fun! We were taught so much more than just saying a commercial out loud or learning how to pose. We learned how to have poise and manners, how to sit and speak and how to look like well-minded people at auditions and castings or just for life in general. We followed along with the book that I still open from time-to-time and learned how to make a portfolio and how to write a professional letter/email. The classes gave us multiple opportunities to try out for auditions such as Passport to Discovery and the Barbizon Competition. They gave us the information on what we needed to prepare ourselves to really jump into our careers after graduation. Through Placement, I received a list of different agencies and I decided to sign with the I and I Agency in Kansas City.

What did you gain from your Barbizon classes?
From the very first class to the last was the very best and most enjoyable six months I’ve had because not only did I make so many unique and lifelong friends, I had really taken up on the personal development training which gave me the strength and the confidence to step out of my comfort zone to keep trying for something new. I stayed excited to keep auditioning and get myself out there to gain some amazing experiences and exposure. Before Barbizon, I wouldn’t have had the courage to walk down the runway as a woman with my size 18 next to others who are a size 2, but now I own my full-figured body and kill that runway every time. There is actually no other place where I feel more comfortable now. I have gained the right positive attitude I really needed and the mindset to say I can do this and go out and do it. Barbizon pushed me to better myself every day and to always have the drive and determination in anything and everything I’m doing. Barbizon laid out the path for me to follow and gave me hope that I could have a career being a plus size figure for runway, print, commercial and television. Barbizon has changed my life.

What was your favorite thing about the Barbizon Competition?
The nerves you feel before getting onstage to say your commercial and to walk down the runway with 50 agents surrounding you is the most surreal and exciting feeling. It’s a rush of euphoria that explodes throughout your body as you’re walking down with all of the lights and everyone’s eyes on you for that moment and you get to own that moment. It’s a moment where I feel I can inspire others that any person of any size can do anything they set their minds to. If you can dream it, you can achieve it. I went to Indianapolis with 2 of my classmates Nikki and Jordan from Kansas City that graduated the same year as me and we all had received awards and over 10 callbacks each. (Watch out for the Kansas Barbizon Baddies haha!) Getting the chance to experience that with some of my closest friends was so awesome and we took many pictures to save the moment! I took a 15 and a half hour train and bus ride to get to this competition because I just knew that this was my chance to make a name for myself and to show I stand out from the crowd. This was worth every penny I have worked for. I knew this weekend was going to put my foot in the door, that I just needed someone to notice me and what I’m trying to achieve. I also loved the feedback I received from not just the agents but the other contestants and the staff. A lot of people believe in my dreams and the message I’m trying to put out there. I didn’t know that before. I have inspired others to go after what they’re yearning for because I am. It’s amazing that through my actions I can help influence someone else’s dreams. I learned the impact you can have on others with your story and the happiness I gain from sharing it is truly heart touching and has shaped me into an even more grateful person.

Would you recommend Barbizon and/or the Competition to friends? 
Of course I would! This was the the most inspiring and uplifting weekends of my life. If you truly have a passion to act, sing, dance, and walk on the runway then this competition is for you! Not everyone is given this chance and we were already trained for this big day, we just had to show it off. Barbizon isn’t just a school, it’s lifelong memories and friends, lifelong opportunities to advance your career and a lifelong motivation to keep striving for what you love. I auditioned for Barbizon for fun, I never would’ve thought I could have came this far just a year later but something about the training pushed me to do better. Not just in acting or modeling but in my everyday life, for how I handle things and treat others, for how much of an organized and well-grounded person I am now. I’ve gained more wisdom and confidence in just this past year than I have my whole life. I think for the youth that has excitement for this industry, they should be taking these classes because I have honestly never seen more well-behaved children, plus it’s even cuter when they have such confidence to give a walk with attitude. All parents should look into this school because the development is outstanding and they could find a passion for something new!

Congratulations on already signing with Katalyst and Images Agency! What are your goals for the next year?
Thank you so much! It’s still so surreal! They had called literally the day after I came home and to have someone interested in me so much to sign that quickly was a great feeling and I am so excited to start working with them and traveling more for jobs! I’m a very in the moment kind of person and I love to always focus on the next thing as well but a year from now I would love to have auditioned for New York Fashion Week and to have taken as many job opportunities as possible. I do work a full-time job now as a Front Desk Receptionist at a Holiday Inn, but I would someday love to go full-time into this industry. Maybe not in a year from now but definitely sometime soon. I also wish to have walked for a big name designer and I wish to meet my idol, the one and only, Ashley Graham! I strive to be in the position someday to hopefully walk for one her lines too! That would be the ultimate dream come true. But for now I’m going to sign with as many agencies as possible and book many jobs. I love traveling so I wish to do that more and to get off the train by conquering my fears of flying on a plane! I wish to inspire as many people as I can this year and the year after. There is nothing better than the feeling knowing you helped motivate someone through your work.

Is there anything you’d like to say to your Barbizon?
The biggest thank you from the bottom of my heart to the top of it! Without the team and staff this whole weekend would have not happened and for everyone dedicating their time to change young lives. It’s amazing what you guys do and the time and work you’ve put into each of us with training and making sure we are fully prepared. I am so grateful to have been given this opportunity along with the scholarship to help get me here and towards the goals I have yet to accomplish. Thank you for putting together this event and for bringing everyone together to discover many talents from the Midwest because we are unrecognized a lot. Thank you so much again for everything you do and for believing in my dreams and me!

Owen Long graduated from Barbizon PA, competed in July 2018 at the DC Barbizon Competition, and competed in October 2018 at Passport To Discovery. We sat down with him to learn about his Barbizon experience, where he’s at now, and what his goals are for the future. Here’s Owen’s Barbizon Story.

What were your Barbizon classes like?
Very awkward at first. Not many people talked but after a few classes everyone, including myself opened up and very quickly bonded. Which was such a great, uplifting feeling!!

What did you gain from your Barbizon experience?
I think overall I have gained a lot more confidence, I was always an easy person to talk to, but after Barbizon I felt more of myself shining through than a “fake me.” At least that’s what I call it, the way someone acts when they meet another person for the first time and are afraid of showing their true self… I really opened up to not only people at Barbizon, but people at school, work, and even at the hospital I volunteer at.

Would you recommend Barbizon to a friend?
Absolutely!!! A common misconception about this entire program is that it is only for aspiring stars who want to be the next top model or actor, when in reality it’s sole purpose is to bring out who you truly are as a person. I’ve seen more of my friends at Barbizon grow and form into their true selves than I have ever seen anywhere else, with any other program.

You did really well at Passport To Discovery this year, congratulations! Can you tell us a bit about your PTD experience?
My PTD experience was fantastic. It was completely different than what I was expecting, but in a good way. I was away from my phone, the haters, and the school drama. While at the same time isolated with people who share the same passion I do… performing and doing what they love. For me, being surrounded by those people, and making experiences with new people, really opened a path for my true self to come skittering on in. It was truly, and I mean 100%, a life changing experience.

What else have you been doing since graduating from Barbizon?
I have been doing a lot of training and practicing for many auditions that Barbizon has provided for me. Also I have been talking with Dino May, which is my manager from LA. I say “my manager” but  technically none of the papers are signed, yet I know I’m already with him, and everything else is almost official, like I said, other than the official document… (I also don’t want to forget to mention I am heading to LA in January to meet with Dino!)

What are your goals for the future?
Ultimately, move out of this small Pennsylvania town and explore the world. I would love to live full time off of modeling and acting. But at the same time be able to travel and meet new people and have new experiences.

Is there anything you’d like to say to your Barbizon staff?
Nothing other than a big fat THANK YOU. Without the people I have surrounded myself with at Barbizon, I never would have been successful at PTD, the DC competition, and ultimately I probably would not have the confidence I do now. They do everything they can to make sure I do my best, which is very rewarding for everyone at the end of the day!

John Green graduated from Barbizon of Boston, MA in November 2017 and has already been working in the modeling industry for both print and runway! Here’s John’s Barbizon Story:

What have you been doing since graduating?
I have interviewed with TMS agency out of California for a Pepsi commercial. I participated in a short film for Carrie. I am in the process of becoming an extra in a Mark Wahlberg movie and an extra in Little Woman. I participated in New York Fashion Week and was selected for a print ad in Dixie Magazine.

What were your Barbizon classes like?
I came into Barbizon with an open mind and was blown away by all of the support and education I was given to further my career. I was given endless support from my teachers and loved every second of being there.
