Of Jamaican and Nigerian descent, Yemi Sekoni is someone to celebrate this Black History Month as an outstanding woman who wears many hats in the fashion, modeling, and entertainment industry! Latching onto the industry at a young age on the performing and modeling side, she’s now expanded into the production and business world, and she’s here to share with us what it’s like to be in the creator’s seat of the modeling industry! Catch more on her journey and her insight on diversity in the industry as the Founder & Creative Director at Rhode Island Fashion Week *, President/Creative Director at Lights Fashion Philanthropy **, and Owner/Director at Donahue Models & Talent ***.

How did you get your start in the fashion and entertainment industry?

I discovered my passion for performing at the young age of seven when my class staged a short reenactment of “The Sound of Music” for the school. The bug caught on and throughout my high school years, I took to pestering the school principal for permission to perform at every event. During my four years in college in Nigeria, obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, my passions kept me actively participating in theater productions for the Drama Department, and performing with the college band.

Being equipped with my bachelor’s Degree in Education, a Post-Graduate diploma in Marketing, and an MBA, has prepared me for a career in banking, relationship management, event planning, and management. With over 40 years’ experience in various areas of the entertainment industry, including theater, TV, film, print and runway, I continued to work on stage and ventured into television, appearing on a number of TV dramas and becoming a regular cast member on a critically acclaimed soap opera at the time.

You bought Donahue Models & Talent in 2010, can you tell us why you bought the agency and what you’re looking to do with it?

To be honest, I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. I used to be a model for the agency at the time. When I moved to the states from the UK I was looking to get into the industry here, and one thing led to another and I ended up signing with Donahue. Then, she started to mentor me because she had been looking for someone to take it because she was ready to retire.

When the time came, she called me up on the phone one day and was like, “Listen kid I want to retire and I’m looking for someone who can take over my legacy.” And I thought, you know, this is quite the opportunity. If I don’t do this I may spend the rest of my life wondering, “What if?”

I had no idea what to do, but the first thing I did was call the small business administration, had a mentor, they walked me through building my business plan, about financing, it took me about 18 months to figure it out, but thankfully I was able to.

One of the hard parts was stepping out from being just another model to then becoming a business owner and being perceived slightly differently.

What I’ve done from there is to build off of it so we are not just an agency any longer. We produce Rhode Island Fashion Week, we produce a fashion and beauty expo twice a year, and I’m also working with fashion designers providing educational business services and consulting for them to help them grow their brand. So, we’ve really become multifaceted over the nine years.

How have you dealt with diversity in your business this past year? 

Rhode Island, we’re not what you call a ‘high fashion’ state. You’re not getting the Victoria’s Secret client. But what we do have is a lot of commercial work, looking for the homegrown person next door.

There’s a lot of diversity in the audience sitting at home watching TV, and sometimes, we do get asked for racial ‘ambiguity’ when it comes to models. And diversity has extended to clients looking for people with visible disabilities — people watching TV like anyone else.

No two jobs are the same. Even when a client doesn’t ask specifically, I just look across the board [of who I have] to suggest talent, and it’s often a wide array of people. Sometimes they’re not asking for specifics but know what they want to feature when they see [models.]

I pride myself on the fact that my agency was the first in the state to provide a biracial couple. [The husband] ended up being a darker toned Hispanic gentleman — this was for Iggy’s Doughboys. When I’m suggesting talent, I’m looking for everything across the board.

There’s a merging of lines between different cultures, and the differences are going to be fewer and fewer. For the younger generation, the lines are blurrier. They don’t understand what the big deal is, whether it be skin color, or sexual orientation — so we need to be more progressive, and make it less of an issue.

Any advice for those pursuing a career in the fashion/entertainment industry?

Here are five things to do to keep your head in the game.

-Analyze the situation

-Assess your possible solutions

-Seek advice from people you admire

-Don’t be afraid to change direction

At a time when socializing is forbidden, shops, gyms, and restaurants are operating under various restrictions, and we are confined to our homes – for those of us who have it, work has taken on ever more heightened importance. With little else to do, particularly by way of leisure time, work has become a lifeline, providing us with a sense of meaning and normality.

When you go through a Barbizon modeling and acting program, you gain the skills, training, and connections to start your career in the industry! And recent Barbizon Atlanta graduate Joseph Tankel is proof of that in his journey from BUSA student to working talent in the industry.

Since graduating from Barbizon USA, Joseph booked background and featured roles in TV series The Innocent, HEELS, Citadel, and feature film Harold and the Purple Crayon. He also booked runway shows for Coastal Fashion Week Tampa and Orlando and competed in the 33rd Annual Barbizon Competition in Atlanta. We spoke with Joseph to find out more about his Barbizon experience and how it prepared him for a career in modeling and acting. Catch the exclusive interview below!

From your experience as a student to now working as an actor, what is the best piece of advice you would give to all the students attending their first day of class?

Be open minded and ready to learn. Try to make friends and just have fun! Be at least 15 minutes early for class because if you show up at the time the class starts you are late. This also applies when you start your career.

After competing in a BUSA competition, what would be your best piece of advice for the new contestants?

Use the knowledge you learned in your classes and show the VIPs what you’ve got. Show you have confidence in yourself!

From your education, placement, and competition experience, what’s the best suggestion you have for those going through the development process with BUSA?

Learn as much as you can, ask lots of questions, and do research. This is not an easy process, but you have the support of BUSA to guide you.

What advice would you give to to the parents of BUSA talent?

Be supportive and help your child through this process. Ask questions since this is a learning experience for you and your child.

Finally, how do you feel your BUSA experience has prepared you for working in the entertainment industry?

BUSA has given me confidence, knowledge, and support to take the next step in my career. I know I can rely on BUSA to help me if I ever need it!

Barbizon classes help our graduates gain the confidence no matter which path they decide to go down. For this Barbizon Houston grad, Camille Rutherford, the path is heading straight for gold. She is currently training for the 2024 Olympics representing the Bahamas. Rutherford recently won the U20 Track and Field Championship in Costa Rica in the 100m and 200m. She also placed 4th in the U23 Track and Field Championship in Costa Rica. Read her interview below to see how her Barbizon classes impacted her journey!

Can you tell us a little bit about your experience growing up and what got you into track?

CR: “I was the youngest of my three sisters growing up and my father always encouraged us to play sports, particularly tennis. We would go out to the tennis courts every day and play for hours. We would end practice by sprinting down and back. I would run past all of my
sisters leaving a huge gap. It was shocking each time because I was 10 years younger than my oldest sister and 5 years younger than my middle sister. It eventually turned into me beating everyone at my sister’s high school tennis camp whenever they would have to sprint. My father decided to sign me up for a track meet and run unattached, and I won my event at that meet. This led to my parents making the decision to put me in the Afterburners track club and I’ve been running ever since!”

What inspired you to start classes at Barbizon? What was your favorite part?

CR: “I wanted to experience the world in a different way other than sports. My desire was to influence and encourage others in the world. I had an idea that I had something in me but did not know how to channel it. Barbizon paved the way for me to fully understand and execute the vision I had for my future self. My favorite part of Barbizon was learning how to model walk. Watching the instructors take time to make sure each one of us mastered the walk was extremely encouraging. Once I mastered it, I felt this surge of confidence I have never felt before! When it was time for our model walk competition in class I executed and was voted as the winner of the competition. Our class competition foreshadowed my future in track and field!”

What is next for you in your journey?

CR: “Becoming The Bahamas’ new ‘Golden Girl’ is the next step in my journey. I am ready to make more history for my country in track and field. I am ready to make a name for myself so I’ll be able to advocate for some changes in the sports world for women. My advice for girls chasing their dreams is to never ignore that strong feeling of desire and passion in your heart. That feeling is a sign to keep going, and it will never go away because that is who you are.”

It’s no surprise that getting started in the modeling and acting industry can be difficult. There is no one-size-fits-all formula for success. Instead, aspiring models and actors need to be creative, understand industry norms and expectations and work hard. The path to booking your first role or casting may look completely different from other models and actors.

One thing is certain though. Almost all paths begin with experience. Actors may consider trying out for a play at a local theater to hone their acting skills and get comfortable in front of a crowd. New models might build their portfolio by working unpaid modeling photoshoots with reputable photographers in exchange for the ability to use their images. Every endeavor, no matter how small, can contribute to your confidence and growth as a performer as well as provide the opportunity to network with other industry professionals.

There are so many ways new talent reach their “get discovered” moment. In some super rare cases, models have been discovered in the most random of places. For example, Kate Moss was discovered while dealing with flight delays in an airport and Cindy Crawford was discovered by a random photographer while attending a football game. On the flip side, stars like Meryl Streep spent years perfecting their craft in theater and smaller film roles before gaining widespread recognition. And truly, while an aspiring model or actor can spend every day having lunch in the window at a local restaurant hoping someone will walk by and say “we have just the right role for you,” it is unlikely for this to happen. Most of today’s working industry professionals spend countless hours learning, practicing, networking, auditioning and generally chasing their dreams. Like with many other things in life, so much of a person’s success is built throughout the journey.

When it comes to social media, there is even a possibility of getting discovered on apps like Instagram or TikTok. If an aspiring model or actor receives an offer from a reputable agency that will develop them, that’s great! Always, always, always start by researching a company that reaches out via social media. Visit their website and be wary of offers that come from generic emails like @gmail.com or @yahoo.com. Most agencies and managers have email addresses that come from the same domain as their website. It might look something like agent@modelingagencyname.com. Any time you are questioning whether or not an opportunity is legitimate, you should reach out to a contact email that you find on the company or agency website to verify it is a legitimate employee of that company. This is normal and any reputable industry contact will be happy to see potential talent taking the steps needed to stay safe and researching who they are communicating with.

For many new models and actors, it will take years of practice and training for them to build confidence in their skills, learn the lingo of the industry, and learn all of the standards and expectations of the industry. At Barbizon, we often help new actors and models who are just starting out. By working on techniques and learning the business side of the modeling and acting business, aspiring talent builds the foundation that will help them chase their dreams.

There is no single “right” way to make it big. In actuality, there are many ways to get started! The most important thing a new model or actor can do is say YES to the opportunities that come your way and to act like a true professional at every job, no matter how small. What do you love about modeling?

I love that it forces me to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations. It is also a great way to express myself.

Where do you like to shop?

Pacsun, American Eagle and Abercrombie are some of my favorite stores to shop at. I also like athletic wear, so Gymshark and Nike are also some of my go-tos.

Where is your favorite place you have ever visited?

Panama city beach is one of my favorite places to visit. I love anywhere with a beach.

Who is your celeb crush? 

Theo James and Tom Blyth are my top two celeb crushes.

Which living person do you admire most? 

I admire my Mom the most. She is the most incredible woman I have ever met.

What is your favorite single item to shop for?

I love shoes. I have way too many shoes.

Where do you shop most?

The place I shop the most is Pacsun.

How would you describe your style?

I have a very simple style. I like to keep it clean, so I usually go for a sweater or plain shirt and jeans.

What is your favorite accessory?

I like anything to do with jewelry. Earrings and necklaces are probably my favorite.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I taught myself how to play some piano.

What 3 words would your friends use to describe you?

Thoughtful, Problem Solver, and Kind.

What is your biggest dream?

My biggest dream is to be a model and actress. I have also wanted to do these things since I was little, but I used to be very shy.

Where do you want to be in 10 years?

I see myself in 10 years being a successful real estate agent.

What 3 cities would you most like to visit?

I would like to visit LA, New York, and Paris the most.

What is your favorite food?

Any type of pasta.

What food do you find most disgusting?

I do not like brussel sprouts.

If you had to wear one pair of shoes in your closet forever, what pair would you choose?

I would probably choose my OnClouds. They are very comfortable and
practical. They also go with almost everything.

What 3 beauty products can you not live without?

Face wash, Deodorant, and Mascara are all essentials for me.

Who is your favorite designer?

It would have to be a tie between Christian Dior and Thom Brown.

Who inspires you in modeling?

Gigi Hadid inspires me in modeling. She is a tall blonde and she is so confident in what she does.

Ever dream about what it’d be like winning $10oK? For Kristen S., that dream just became a reality!

At Barbizon, we are company that believes in empowering the youth through education. Over a decade ago, we created Barbizon’s $100,000 College Tuition Scholarship with this goal in mind. By awarding our scholarship recipients, Barbizon becomes a part of their educational journey and the foundation upon which they build their careers.

From Lafayette, our most recent winner is Kristen S.  This fifth grader is goal-oriented and eager to grow through higher education pursuits. Learn more about her below.

What made you enter the $100,000 College Tuition Scholarship?

 I felt it would be a great opportunity for my future. 

What do you feel makes you a good candidate for this scholarship?

I look forward to attending college making my mom proud and playing basketball.

What made you sign up for Barbizon?

My mom signed me up because I am really talented. I love to sing and write music, dance, act, model, gymnastic and basketball, track, volleyball. I am a package. 

How did Barbizon help you?

I learned how to be more confident in front of a crowd and walk the runway. I am able to take good criticism and not care what some people say.

What did you like best about Barbizon?

Being a part of the Barbizon Atlanta competition, going to the workshops, doing improv and acting out a scenario with a partner.

What do you think has stuck with you most from your Barbizon classes?

My confidence level being on stage in front of a big crowd and interacting with people model walk.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering Barbizon?

It’s a fun, good experience. I feel I can be me and show the world my talent and personality. They should join the Barbizon family.
