Creator’s Spotlight: Filmmaker S. Roy Saringo

By Theresa Standfast, Barbizon International

As a modeling and acting program that prepares young people for careers in the industry, not only is it essential to know how to create work in front of the camera, but also all the work that goes on behind it! And who better to share with us the inner workings of being a creator in the film industry, than a filmmaker himself?

Meet creative storyteller, writer, and director, S. Roy Saringo. From starting out fresh with a film degree from Full Sail University where thereafter his first official film work for a zombie movie, The Human Trace, was left uncredited on IMDB, he’s gone on to adapt three best-selling novels into screenplays for the United Talent Agency in LA, An Imperfect Lens by Ann Roiphe, Utopia by Lincoln Child, and Kill Me by Stephen White.

Shooting numerous short films for a mix of corporate and small business clients, Roy is also currently a partner at production company Ethos Pictures in Beverly Hills. Roy is here to answer all our questions on his journey in filmmaking up until today, where he’s recently released his very own co-directed, shot, and produced film, Filtered!

What inspired you to start working in film? Roy behind the camera filming two surfers on the beach about to enter the water

The moment I finished watching Pulp Fiction I knew I wanted to make films. There was something about the way Quentin Tarantino told that story that elevated the art of storytelling to me. It was different, it was fresh, and it had my attention.

What kinds of projects do you work on as a professional videographer and what kind of training does someone need to start working as a videographer?

Most of my current work is run-and-gun, simple setups, do-it-yourself kind of videography. (e.g. corporate videos; testimonials; wedding videos.) When I started at Full Sail University, I had no clue about anything that had to do with anything in film and video, so film school benefited me in that way, because it taught me from the ground up.

These days, YouTube will answer most questions you have about anything. I still search that site for answers I don’t know. My best advice is to do something hands-on either on your own or under someone willing to mentor you. It’s not uncommon to start with making coffee as a “gofer” and working your way up the ranks. The way I did it was bartering with a CrossFit gym to let me work out for free in exchange for weekly photos and videos to add to their social media sites. Plenty of companies love to barter. I still do it with my chiropractor. I also started as a volunteer at my church. Whether it’s a local church that has no media or one that has an established media team, both are beneficial in learning and gaining hands-on experience.

My church started with dinky handycams when I first volunteered, and I did everything from shooting to editing every video we made. It’s tough to do by yourself, but you learn quickly and you get better even quicker. Now my church rivals any live-television program out there, and I’m part of a larger team. There’s learning on every stage. Never stop learning.

From a director’s perspective, what is the benefit of working with an actor that has had training through Barbizon or some other acting training program?

Roy behind the camera laughing while on set with a Barbizon actor who is also laughing Training as an actor is important, because at the end of the day, acting is a job. Acting is work. You get out of it what you put into it. It’s show business, not show hobby. Hobby work gets hobby results. No director in any medium wants to work with someone who doesn’t take this business seriously. That’s why Barbizon is a great first step, because being a part of Barbizon lets professionals know you’re willing to put in work.

But Barbizon can’t make you into a great performer, it can only provide you with the tools and education to become one. But put in the work with the tools and knowledge you have, and you’ll make any director’s life easier. As they say, “a rising tide raises all ships.” The benefits of working with a competent performer elevates the project entirely, and that starts with training and taking it seriously. (Also… I’m probably going to choose to work with that competent performer again.)

As a Filipino-American who grew up in Queens, NY, how have you seen diversity play a role in and change within the film industry during your career?

As a film buff, I’m inspired by many movies, actors, and filmmakers just because excellent is excellent no matter what. On one hand, culture and heritage has nothing to do with why I love certain bodies of work. On the other hand, it’s always a low point to find a person or people on screen who share those sacred things about you misrepresented or under-represented.

body shot of Roy looking dapper in a suitI remember watching Michael Bay’s The Rock and noticing a scene where Nic Cage is chased through a restaurant kitchen and a cook yells something in Tagalog, but the way he said it wasn’t authentic-sounding to the Filipino language. It’s like they had some random Asian man verbalize something written in the script. Or in the true story of Domino Harvey, a Ford-model-turned-bounty-hunter (portrayed by Keira Knightley), her fellow bounty hunting partner in real life is a Filipino-Hawaiian named “Choco,” but for the movie aptly named Domino, he was turned into a Hispanic man portrayed by a Venezuelan actor. It’s sad to think the real person wasn’t appealing enough that he had to be stripped of his ethnicity to something more “familiar.” It wasn’t too long ago that I was shocked to find Filipino actors portraying Filipino characters in shows like “Superstore” and “The Good Place.” And they were funny characters as opposed to being made fun of.

Now with the shift of more and more inclusion, it’s definitely an upward trajectory to know we’re being heard and seen a lot more in ways that better represent us. We still have a long way to go, but it’s a humbling feeling to be at this part of history where we get to be part of the change.

What advice do you have for someone looking to start a career in filmmaking?

My advice to anyone wanting to start a career in filmmaking is: DON’T DO IT. I’m kidding, but I’m also not. Make films because you don’t want to do anything else. Make films because you can’t see yourself doing anything else. Make films because you have to and because you need to. Wants change. Needs remain. I need to eat. I need to drink. I need to breathe. I need to make films. Want is not an option for any of the previous actions. And if you just want to, you won’t stick around through the ups-and-downs, and it’s a tough terrain ahead of you. The need will save you if must is the only option you have.

But for the ones who are all in: pick up a camera, find some friends, and film something. It’s never been easier than it is now. Make a short film. Submit it to film festivals. Get honest feedback. You can even make cheesy church videos or the hypest workout promos like I did. Just keep doing something behind a camera. Remember, it’s show business. Put in the work and take it seriously. Study the craft and make failure your best friend. The more you fail, the sooner you’ll win. Try, fail, adjust. Try, fail, adjust. Rinse, lather, repeat. It’s a part of success. Also… study the greats, watch their films, read their biographies. Study, study, study.

Do you have any funny or interesting on set stories?

body shot of Roy wearing a funny animated shirt that he's pointing to with a smug expressionThe funniest thing that’s happened to me on set wasn’t even on a set I was working on. During a visit to Chicago a few years back, I was walking around Grant Park downtown and texting a Chicago-native friend about where to buy authentic deep dishes and hot dogs. Because I was texting, I obviously wasn’t paying attention to my surroundings, so when I finally looked up, I immediately noticed actors Emmy Rossum and Dermot Mulroney walking towards me. So, without hesitation, I decided to approach them for a selfie. That’s when I heard, “CUT!” I looked around and realized I was on the set of Shameless – right in the middle of it. Lights, grip, and crew were everywhere looking at me.

They must’ve thought I was a park extra, because I was doing what the park extras were doing: walking the park and acting normal, until I “broke character.” A P.A. ran up to me and escorted me off. The funny part was before we walked away, I had the nerve to still ask for the selfie, and the actors were so confused with what was happening – I think they would’ve done it. The P.A. looked around, probably saw his A.D., and said, “Sorry, you have to leave.” I never did get that selfie. But to my defense: when was the next time I’d have an opportunity to take a selfie with both Emmy and Dermot together on the set of Shameless?

Congratulations on your recently released film Filtered. What inspired you to create and direct your own film?

Filtered film promotional posterFiltered came to me when I was ready to quit pursuing film and take on an unrelated corporate job. A trusted friend of mine had a heart-to-heart and said what I should’ve told myself in the first place… that she couldn’t see me doing anything else but making films. And being that I wasn’t making any films or had plans to, I took the risk of not taking the job in Corporate America to wait for an opportunity that wasn’t anywhere on the horizon.

Until, that is, a week later another friend invited me to watch her kids perform a stage musical at a small church in Safety Harbor, Florida. She said I had to meet the local writer/director (Katie Combs) who had written all original music and lyrics for this musical… performed by all kids… at a small church… in a small suburban town. None of which was compelling me to go other than being respectful towards a friend who was proud to share their kids’ accomplishments with me.

So, I went, and I was so confused, because none of the things aforementioned became a cause of cringe. As a matter of fact, these kids’ musical held at a small church in a small suburban town written by a nobody I’ve never heard of was actually remarkable. So much so, I asked to have coffee with Katie the next day. I asked why her kids lacked cringe. From their solos and harmony to their stage presence and presentation, they were remarkable. Everyone knew their lines. No one had stage fright or nervous jitters.

She told me her method of teaching, and it was very much on my wavelength. I just didn’t know anyone personally who approached directing the same way. So, we happily decided to make it a goal to work together. Katie invited me to watch and consider a musical her high school-aged students were workshopping that was created specifically for them to perform. It was the same story. I sat in the audience going, “What is going on? Why is this so good? Who is this Katie Combs?” It would eventually go on to win “Best Musical” at the Tampa Theatre Festival

What is Filtered about and where can people watch it?

Filtered is a powerful, poignant, honest look at social media told by the teenagers who live it. I thought, “Ten characters, bedrooms, classrooms, cafeteria… How hard could it be to shoot? Everyone already knows their lines. It’s basically the same script just adapted to film. We just have to find locations, film it, go to a recording studio and record songs and mix it. We can finish it in a couple months.”

Roy on set of Filtered filming teen actors in a lunchroom settingSo, after the workshop finished Katie and I agreed to make Filtered our first project together. It became more than that, Filtered is our first feature film ever. With no experience, no money, no crew – all we had was the audacity to believe we can do it. So, we did it. We did everything a full crew would do, just by ourselves. Me, Katie, and eventually Joe Cosas with everything post-production audio-related. He, too, never worked on a feature film. Phone calls to industry friends and YouTube were common.

So, the fact that we won “Best Film” at the Tampa Bay Motion Picture Industry Professionals Film Festival and now getting programmed at the Sunscreen Film Festival can only attest to the power of “just doing it” even in the face of inexperience and small budgets. With the pandemic and lockdown, it took us a little over a year to complete, but we did it, and we did it ourselves.

Roy with the Actors from FilteredIf you’re in the Tampa Bay area and Sunscreen Film Festival hasn’t occurred yet, find tickets to our screening at their website: sunscreenfilmfestival.com. Come find me, say hello, and don’t forget to mention you’re in the Barbizon family. If the festival is done with, we’re hoping to work with a distributor to get our film into your homes via a streaming service.  Other than that, we’re hoping to get programmed into other festivals this year. Fingers-crossed that one will be near you.

If you haven’t heard yet, Barbizon has teamed up with Girls’ Life Mag to give away the ultimate modeling experience! 2020 brought in some amazing model talent, so much so that we’re featuring exclusive interviews to learn more about each semi-finalist! From Brooklyn, NY, meet Saskia Guerrier, a Barbizon grad and dancer who believes the opportunity to participate in the Get Discovered contest is a great way to be a role model. She wants to reach girls all over the world and encourage them to dream big, strive for greatness, and never let small things get in the way of their goals. Catch all the 10 things you need to know about Saskia below!

What activities or sports do you participate in?

saskia dancing in a mid air shot of her jumping elegantlyI participate in Dance practicing all styles of dance.

What inspired you to get into modeling and the performing arts?

When I was younger I walked past a dance school and saw girls twirling around which seemed really fun. I fell in love with the whole style of ballet in particular and decided to enroll. With modeling, I would always see a girl on a magazine in my mother’s hand or on the television and think to myself, “What if that was me?” I would end up dressing up with friends and always putting on a fashion show.

What did you learn as a Barbizon student and have you done anything in the modeling and acting industry since Barbizon?

Through the Acting Program at Barbizon, I enhanced my learning on the skills and tips to be a successful actress. I’ve learned things such as slating, resume building, and how to bring my personality and character into my acting.

What was it like to see yourself featured on Girls’ Life’s instagram?

Saskia modeling outside in a long yellow dress and smilingSeeing myself on Girls’ Life Magazine Instagram was such an honor. I felt as if my career was taking effect and I felt as if I was finally being seen by the world. It was truly an amazing feeling and I could not even digest how happy I was to be featured on a magazine at such a young age.

What’s your favorite food?

My favorite food is Haitian food especially white rice with legume and sauce pois.

If there’s one thing you would want your peers to know about you, what would it be?

If there were one thing I would want my peers to know about me, it would be that I am very supportive and always here for them no matter what. If they are ever in need or need someone to talk to, I would  take the extra mile to assure myself that my peer is on good terms and happy.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Saskia body shot posing and looking semi seriousIn ten years I see myself on billboards, magazines, staring in tv-shows or movies, and traveling the world giving back to people all across.

Who do you look up to the most?

I look up to my mother the most because my mother is a hard working women who never stops going for what she wants and has such a positive mindset. She pushes me to be better everyday of my life and just hearing her stories about how she got to where she is now, I can say that my mother is my hero and mentor through life.

What’s your typical “everyday” look?

I am all about fashion and when I walk on the street or in a setting, it is known that Saskia is there. I love bright colors that pop out my beautiful skin complexion. I would probably have a bright colored top with either nice old fashion vintage jeans/ skirt and unique sneakers. I usually top it with some nice rings, a necklace, and a hand purse to hold all my belongings.

If you could only choose three things to bring to a deserted island, what would they be?

Saskia running on the streets of New York, mid air capture of her jumping and wearing a yellow jumpsuitIf I could only bring 3 things to a deserted Island I would bring my phone, food, and clothing.  I would bring those items because since I am on a deserted island why not take pictures to grasp the moment in many different outfits. You can have your own photoshoot! I would also bring my phone so I can communicate with people I know and take great shots. Food is very essential and you need nutrients to stay active and alive so I would bring that as well.

To connect with Saskia, follow her on Instagram @saskia_l_g and check back here for more exclusive interviews on all of our 2020 Get Discovered Contest semi-finalists!

10 Things to Know About Semi-Finalist Lily Huang

Barbizon and Girls’ Life’s Get Discovered Model Search contest always brings in some of the best and brightest fresh faces. And learning about what makes each girl unique is nothing short of amazing! In this exclusive interview, 2020 Semi-Finalist Lily Huang gives us insight into her life as a regular teen and aspiring model from her interests and fashion inspiration to her feelings on her cultural heritage. Catch all the details on Lily below, and enter the Get Discovered contest yourself for a chance to be featured next plus win a photoshoot in Girls’ Life Magazine!

What do you like most about modeling?

Being in front of the camera is definitely my favorite part about modeling because I can show my personality and who I am in front of everyone. And by pursuing my passion to be a fashion model, I can also meet a lot of new people in this industry and make friends.

Lily modeling, seated on the porch of a skyrise with a skyline in the background As a recent Barbizon graduate, have you done anything in the modeling and acting industry since your graduation?

I have signed with a local agency, walked in fashion shows, and modeled for local brands!

Other than modeling, what hobbies or activities do you participate in?

I found a great interest in ceramics as well, especially doing ceramics to develop a unique perspective to look at things and their beauties. I also do a lot of volunteering in my community as I feel like it should be my duty to help others if I can.

What career would you like to pursue after high school and why?

I would like to study international relations in college and want to be a marketing director for an international company. Not only do I think it is cool to study about different countries across the world, but also by being a marketing director, I can fully utilize my creativity and interest in different cultures to market for a product or a brand.

Who do you admire most?

I admire my mom the most. She was the first generation immigrant to the U.S. in my family. By the time she was here in this country alone, she had to do everything for a living while having difficulties with the language and the culture. I admire her strong adaption to a new environment and her endurance in hard conditions like having a language barrier.

What was it like to see yourself featured on Girls’ Life’s Instagram?Lily in front of a green planted background modeling with an orange bucket hat on

It was surreal! I got asked by my friends and classmates when they saw my post featured on Girl’s Life’s Instagram. First of all, I was really happy that they asked. Secondly, I think it was a good way to show my friends and the ones around me about the more in-depth story of me and the side of me as a fashion model.

Where do you get fashion inspiration from?

I get my fashion inspiration from different brands’ social media content. I will try to find a piece of similar clothing that they style with and wear it on myself, and I am always trying to catch onto current trends.

What type of music do you listen to, and who’s your favorite artist?

I listen to Pop and Indie music a lot, and my favorite artist is Taylor Swift. Not only is her music really good and she’s very talented, but also her music is so unique as each and every music piece tells a story of her own or teaches a lesson based on her experience.

Lily modeling sporty attire with a bucket hat onWhat is your cultural background and what is one thing you would share with others about it that means something to you?

I come from a family with a variety of cultures, including Chinese, Japanese and American cultures. I want to let others know to always appreciate your background. I am really thankful for my parents letting me immerse with different cultures when I was little. It not only allowed me to look at things from different perspectives, it led me to develop a greater interest to learn about other cultures.

On a typical Saturday, where can someone find you, and doing what?

On a typical Saturday, people can find me maybe running around the neighborhood as part of my daily exercise routine or they might find me grabbing a drink from a local shop after my run!

Every year Barbizon and Girls’ Life Magazine team up on a model search contest to give one lucky girl the opportunity to get discovered! With so many amazing semi-finalists, picking just one winner is always difficult! And we just love getting to know each semi-finalist. Meet Tiffany Seagle, a 2020 Get Discovered contest semi-finalist. She’s a fashionista passionate about style, clothing design, and music with a desire to enter the modeling world too. Catch ten things you need to know about her below, and be sure to enter for your very own chance to win this year’s ultimate model prize package!

When did you become first interested in modeling?

I kind of always wanted to be a model. I love to dress up and put on makeup and I think modeling looks fun! When I saw the modeling contest page on the Girls Life Magazine I really wanted to enter so I did.

What was it like seeing yourself featured on Girls’ Life’s Instagram?

I was so excited seeing myself on Girls Life instagram! I loved the picture that they posted, the editing was so cool!

Tiffany playing the violaWhat is your biggest passion and how are you pursuing it?

My biggest passion right now is to play my viola in orchestra. I have been playing viola now for 4 years. I love it and I always try to devote time to play. I am actually currently the first chair in my section!

What’s your favorite subject in school?

My favorite core subject in school is probably English. I also like history because it is interesting. Besides that though, my favorite class is orchestra.

Where do you get fashion inspiration from?

I get my fashion inspiration from many sources. I mostly get my style inspiration from Pinterest and TikTok.

How would you describe your personal style?

I don’t really have a personal “aesthetic” LOL. I love many different styles. My favorite styles are preppy, chic, causal, and cottagecore! I actually have a YouTube channel about fashion called TiffanyTheFashionista.

Where do you like to go shopping?body shot of Tiffany outside wearing a fashionable outfit and purse

I go shopping for my clothes at many places. My favorite stores right now to get clothes are Nordstrom’s, Tommy Hilfiger, and Tilly’s!

Who do you look up to as a role model?

I look up to my parents as role models.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years, I probably see myself graduating law school. I have wanted to be a lawyer for a while now because I think that job would be a good fit for me. I like to talk to people and analyze things.

If you could only bring three things to a deserted island, what would they be?

If I could only bring 3 things to a deserted island, they would probably be my phone, food, and water.

And be sure to enter yourself for a chance to “Get Discovered” and win the ultimate model experience of your dreams in 2022!

Meet Lily Huang: Get Discovered Winner 2020

photo of Lily modeling in front of a garage and holding a purseWhat do you love about modeling?

I love being the spotlight, and the one who can deliver messages for designers, photographers, or anyone that I am modeling for including myself.

Where is your favorite place you have ever visited?

Ko Samui, Thailand – It has the most gorgeous beach ever in the world.

Who is your celeb crush?

Timothée Chalamet!!!!!!!

Which living person do you admire most?

My mom. She has always been my role model. Her story of immigrating to the US alone from China years ago and finding her American dream getting achieved is always very inspiring to me, especially when I am feeling discouraged by hardships.

How would you describe your style? Lily modeling against a stair case in urban wear next to a graffitied wall

Urban chic.

Do you have any hidden talents?

Playing piano + being fluent in two languages (and learning my third and fourth language right now in school) + video-gaming (PUBG)

What is your biggest dream?

To walk for either Chanel, Dior, or Jacquemus one day!

Where do you want to be in 10 years?

New York City!!! I can see myself being busy around all the fashion events happening during fashion weeks and stepping in-and-out of one of the high-rise office buildings, and working for an international relations consultation company.

Lily seated on a rooftop against a NYC skyscapeWhat 3 cities would you most like to visit?

Paris, Milan, and Tokyo

What three beauty products can you not live without?

Mascara (getting those popping eyes), lipstick (making my lips shine), concealer (covering up some spots)

Who inspires you in modeling?

Liu Wen. She is absolutely slaying whenever she is onstage or on set, and her story of entering the modeling world as a Chinese woman is very encouraging to young models like me to have someone to look up to and also who shares the same culture and heritage as me.

Meet Alana Lintao: Get Discovered Winner 2021

black and white head shot of Alana Lintao modelingWhat is the last book you read?

Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook by Gary Vaynerchuck. I’m a marketing major so I’ve been reading into a lot of books that will help me further my knowledge in the subject!

What do you love about modeling?

The way it makes me feel! I’ve been on stage or in front of a camera since I can remember, every performance or photoshoot I do makes me more confident. I love the entire process as well! From getting my makeup done, to meeting new people on set, and seeing the final result of the shoots is just everything.

Where do you like to shop?

I love shopping at Aeropostale, Hollister, Garage, PacSun, Urban Outfitters, and Forever 21! I’ve also been vibing with thrift shops recently, but they’re definitely a hit or miss.

Who is your celeb crush?

Timothée Chalamet.

Alana seated on a porch stoop wearing athletic clothes and large yellow hoop earringsHow would you describe your style?

Cute & comfy! I also tend to gravitate more towards colorful pieces. I LOVE a fun pop of color.

What is your favorite accessory?

I’m always wearing earrings! I’ve also recently been loving necklaces and rings.

If you had to wear one pair of shoes in your closet forever, what pair would you chose?

My black Converse for sure. I’ve been a Converse gal since I was little!

Do you have any hidden talents?

Alana in a dancer's pose in front of a statue at a museumI’m an open book! Although, a lot of my followers are always still so surprised when I tell them I’ve been a dancer for 10 years. I can also sing the alphabet backwards?

What 3 cities would you most like to visit?

LA has always been one of them so I can’t wait to cross that off the list! My brother & I have always talked about visiting Tokyo one day which would be super fun. Lastly, Manilla in the Philippines.

Where do you want to be in 10 years?

As for right now, in 10 years I want to be a signed, working model. I also hope to have a million followers on my social platforms and maybe even have my own business! I could also see myself getting back into acting sometime down the line, I would love to be featured on Netflix. Ultimately, I hope to continue to leave a positive impact on others through my platform and inspire others to chase and never give up on their dreams

Who inspires you in modeling?

Zendaya. It was crazy watching her as a teenager on Disney Channel, then seeing her work all the way up to Vogue!

Be sure to watch Barbizon and Girls’ Life’s Instagram for more on these girls when they head out to Los Angeles for their photoshoot in November of 2021!

Actuarial Science

Kind, driven, focused, determined, smart, dependable

If you were given the power to change any one thing in the world, what would you change?
I would rid the world of hatred and create a place where everyone loves each other despite their differences.

What made you enter the $100,000 College Tuition Scholarship?
I entered on a whim. I saw $100,000 and knew that a scholarship that large could change the course of my future, so I put in my information and it ended up working out.

What do you feel makes you a good candidate for this scholarship?
I believe that I am a good candidate because my education is one of the most important things to me. Getting this scholarship lessens the burden that a high cost college education puts on my disabled veteran parents and makes my dream of becoming a college graduate come true.

Since its creation, Barbizon’s college scholarship program has awarded $1.5 million.

Modeling and Acting Scams to Avoid

$
0
0

An awful truth of the modeling and acting industry is that scams exist. It is so important for aspiring models and actors to educate themselves on what is acceptable practice in the industry and what to watch out for.

At Barbizon, we want to provide information that helps anyone with goals of pursuing modeling and acting to make their dreams come true. We have put together a list of modeling and acting scams that you need to be aware of and avoid. Knowledge is everything, so please take a few minutes to review this list and stay diligent as you reach for the stars.

    • Be wary of agencies or schools that guarantee work.
No one can guarantee work. A college can not guarantee a job to a student the same way that agencies and modeling schools can not guarantee jobs in the industry. What agencies and schools can offer are opportunities. Like any other industry, landing modeling and acting jobs is about the needs of the industry and whether or not you are the right candidate to provide what the job is asking for. If an agency or school guarantees work, do your research on the company and ask questions to really understand what is offered and what is really being guaranteed.
    • Exercise caution with people who want to charge for pictures and/or portfolios first.
As a model or actor you will at some point in your career need to have pictures taken for comp cards or headshots, but if you are being asked to shell out money at the absolute start of your career it could be a red flag. Compare the prices you are being asked to pay and ask to see examples of work before deciding if there is value in the offer. Also, know that a portfolio is a book of actual work done, not a collection of your favorite photo shoots so you can’t purchase a true portfolio.
    • Beware of companies who want to put you in a directory to be sent out.
You need to research what the directory offered is all about. Ask how and who the directory is accessible to and see what others have posted about the directory on the internet.
    • National or international affiliations can speak volumes.
There is a saying “You are the average of five people you surround yourself with,” that you may heard. The company and clientele your school or agency works with speaks volumes about how reputable they are.
    • Ask how long the agency has been established.
Be wary of small agencies with no history. Being new does not necessarily mean a company is a scam, however without the longevity of providing value to clients and creating a niche of experience and knowledge within the industry you will need to be extra cautious in determining the legitimacy of a company.
    • Pay attention to the email address or account you are talking to.
Usually, an email from a legitimate company will come from an email address with a branded domain. For example, an email from Barbizon may come from a info@barbizonusa.com or info@barbizon.tv type email address. When an email comes from an @gmail.com or @yahoo.com or any other free email service, you should perform an extra level of due diligence to make sure you are speaking with an authorized representative of the company/agency. This goes for social media requests as well. If someone claims to have scouted you via social media, it is a good idea to check out the company’s website and call the official number or email the official email address to verify the account who reached out to you. You should never provide payment information or send photos to any one in the industry without knowing who you are speaking with, why they are requesting that information and what the industry standard is so you can be sure you are only working with reputable companies.

Barbizon Modeling and Acting school was established in 1939. We share testimonials from students, parents and renowned agency/industry professionals on our website and encourage potential students to visit third-party websites like Consumer Affairs and the Better Business Bureau to learn more about our services. Though we cannot guarantee work, we can provide you with benchmark industry instruction as well as opportunities and support to navigate the industry. We will always work to support our brand promise:

The Barbizon experience is about discovering what makes you special, and developing your one-of-a-kind “star” quality for the whole world to see. Our expert modeling and acting training, along with life-skills instruction, will give you the confidence and tools to shine for a lifetime.

We hope this information helps you to be safe and diligent as you start in the modeling and acting industries.
