My Barbizon Story: An Interview with Ashanti Simmons

By: Meredith Bahuriak, Barbizon International

Ashanti Simmons headshotAshanti Simmons reached out to us to say, “Thank you Barbizon! You have helped me boost my confidence, become nicer and more professional.” Of course I had to know more about the Barbizon of Rochester 2018 grad and contacted her for an insider interview. Here’s the scoop on Ashanti’s Barbizon experience and modeling career!

What were your Barbizon classes like?
Class was amazing! My favorite part about class was walking the runway. I loved the fact that we learned all the different runway terms and memorized a monologue. My instructor critiqued me so well I actually did get better and that has helped me in the long run.

Ashanti Simmons performing at Barbizon CompetitionWhat did you gain from your Barbizon experience?
Barbizon helped me have better manners and taught me and how to act around professionals and how to be professional.

What else have you been doing since graduating from Barbizon?
I still remember my first Barbizon Competition, it was amazing! I got three callbacks! The thing I like about the competition is it’s near your market, so the agencies are local, which makes it easier to get callbacks.

Ashanti Simmons Kamara's Closet photoshootI stayed in contact with Barbizon Placement and I got my first modeling job through Barbizon Placement which was a photoshoot for Kamara’s Closet, and it was amazing! I was so glad I took the Barbizon classes because I already knew what to pose and what to do. The shoot went really smoothly and I’m going to be doing more photoshoots for them!

What are your goals for the future?
Through Barbizon Placement I received castings for Coastal Fashion Week and for New York Fashion Week. Since we took runway classes I knew how to walk, how to wear heels, how to walk in heels, and how to pose. I submitted my video and photos and I got a callback for both! I am so excited I am going to be walking in Coastal Fashion Week and New York Fashion week 2020!

Today, Bekah attends UNT where she walked for the merchandising and fashion design students’ events such as their annual ArtWear show, and for NYFW designer Mahiri Takai at his menswear show that took place at the university. After informing us it was at UNT when she really got serious about modeling, we wanted to know more about Bekah and her experiences.

How was your Barbizon experience?

I really got to know what goes on behind the scenes of a photoshoot or [during] the filming of a movie. I learned everything from public speaking to self-care to how to nail an interview.

Modeling in a seated pose on top of a table surrounded by bookshelvesWhat is your favorite thing about Barbizon?

The classes are all changing to reflect the current trends in the industry which is cool because after you graduate you can always go back and retake classes and be up-to-date.

What is your favorite thing about modeling?

There is kind of a performative aspect to it I have always enjoyed. I feel I need to portray the character of the person who would wear the clothing. I’ve always loved acting and being on stage. Modeling has come naturally to me since I don’t tend to smile much! So it’s easy to convey expressions and confidence through my eyes and posture instead when I have to keep a straight face.

What was the biggest challenge for you when you first started modeling? Did modeling help you discover new things about yourself?

My biggest challenge has been my height (5’7″). I have the right body measurements for high fashion but my height is a bit on the short side. However, my idols are the iconic Kate Moss, who is also 5’7″ and Cara Delevigne, who is 5’8″. So if they can make it, why can’t I?

Describe the most memorable moment or project you have worked on.Bekah modeling on the runway

The most memorable project I worked on was when I was in Paris. I bonded with the girls that were also there with my agency at the time; they were very encouraging. We explored the city together and looked out for one another. Before I stepped out on the runway they all wished me good luck from backstage. I like it when girls band together instead of competing against each other. That was just a really powerful moment.

Do you have any special talents or hobbies?

Well I’m studying creative writing at UNT. I love to write songs and compose music. Writing is a creative outlet for me; I just want to create things that move people.

Bekah modeling for an online campaign with another woman seated back to backWhat are your current modeling goals and future plans?

I want to book more jobs whether they’re in Dallas or in other cities. I’d love to travel more; do more work in print or on the runway. I’m thinking of moving to New York for grad school and to continue my modeling career.

Do you have any advice for current Barbizon students and alum?

Barbizon is really what you make of it and I am so grateful for the opportunities and experiences I’ve had.

Speakout Spotlight: An Interview with Barbizon Model Kameron Jackson

By: Meredith Bahuriak, Barbizon International

Speakout Spotlight is our Insider series giving Barbizon alumni a platform for their voice to be heard. Interviews detail more than one’s Barbizon experience, they depict each individual’s unique challenges in the modeling and acting industry, an industry that is working toward more inclusivity and diversity as a whole. As 2020 has sprung challenges upon all of us, including a global pandemic and societal unrest, Speakout Spotlight aims to unite by amplifying our understanding of each other. With Speakout Spotlight, our goal at Barbizon is to listen, educate, and learn from our own Barbizon family.

Kameron Jackson is 16 years old from Brunswick, GA. He graduated from Barbizon of Savannah in December 2019. This is Kameron’s story.

What was your favorite thing about being in the Barbizon classes?

Bodyshot of Kameron Jackson smilingI would say the instructors and also the students. They’re just so nice, they’re helping, and they want you to succeed so they feed you with so much positivity and push you to make sure that you do not fall or fail.

What were your Barbizon classes like, especially as a guy?

It was fun. I’ve met a lot of students that were at Barbizon who want to do the same thing as me. As I listened and talked to them, some of them wanted to be fashion designers, some of them wanted to be directors, some of them wanted to be models, some of them just wanted life skills.

Being around them, it influenced me, and it’s like, okay, I am around people who want to do so much more and at the highest level as I do. So I can connect with these people and work with them and maybe we can have something to work on in the future.

What did you gain from your Barbizon experience?

Body shot of Kameron in a blue, plaid suit looking seriousMost definitely more confidence. Barbizon really brought me out of my comfort zone. I used to be very, very inside, very quiet, and then it brought me out so those life skills that were taught to me I now put in my daily life to help me.

What would you say to someone your age who is struggling with their confidence?

You may not feel very confident because you may be lacking in different aspects of your persona. Work on yourself in that area and don’t listen to negative people or negative thoughts that can corrupt the thinking. Always think positive and find a purpose in the area you’re low in and use that as a fuel to help push you to success!

Since graduating, how has your experience been with Barbizon Placement?

I receive castings all the time from Placement. I utilize the agency list and apply to agencies all the time. Placement is so helpful through the entire process. They are supportive, you can email or call them any time and they get right back to you.

Of course, due to COVID-19 the industry has slowed down, but Placement has done a great job of still finding opportunities, keeping me active and involved, and basically doing everything they can during these times. Placement definitely met my expectations, actually they exceeded my expectations.

I graduated from Barbizon at the end of December of 2019, I requested my Placement Card, I mailed it back, and in just two months, at the end of February 2020, I signed with Hannah Noelle Models. I signed with my first agency literally two months after graduating. It’s truly amazing when you think about it.

What’s it like to be your own advocate in the industry?

body shot of Kameron turning profile with a hand on his head looking inquisitiveIt’s so hard right now, so hard to even say. Let’s just say, it’s really taking it one step at a time and going in the direction that I’m going now. I just have to go in order and manage it whenever it comes.

I want to be a multitude of things so that way I can make sure my voice is heard on different platforms to different age groups, not just a particular age group such as teens. I want to influence adults, seniors, everyone across the whole platform they may watch or see me. Let’s just say making Youtube videos, or being a television host or an actor/model are exposure and when people see me they say, “Oh, okay he’s a good fit. He is different and we can use him.”

A lot of people try to be someone that they’re not. So you have to learn to be who you are, and if people accept you for who you are then that’s good. If not then you have to keep trying until someone notices and thinks, “Okay, he’s not good for this, but he’s different so we can probably use him in another area.”

So, you use your differences to your advantage really?

Correct.

With the current situations and cultural issues we are presently living in, as an African American male, does this industry at all make you nervous that there’s going to be things that are going to be more difficult for you?

I feel that as a black male there are going to be challenges and struggles that I face along the way simply for me being me. It may be easy for others but when it comes down to us, it may not be easy. So we have to learn how to accept them, the way that they come at us, and just keep going forward.

What has been the biggest challenge for you, whether it’s as a model, as an actor, wanting to do writing, wanting to do directing, basically in this industry what has been your biggest challenge?

Shot of Kameron in a polo tee looking interestedThe biggest challenge is probably commitment for sure, and discipline because when you start something you want to finish it. Then, everything else starts blocking the way of you finishing. So you have to figure it out. You have to find balance to make sure whatever is started first gets done before anything else. It’s about discipline for sure.

Do you have any advice for current Barbizon students and alum?

Keep going. Whatever dreams and ambitions that you have for yourself don’t give up. No matter what society says, always stay true to yourself and you will succeed.

What are your goals for the future?

Side profile shot of Kameron smiling and laughingI have a lot of goals. My biggest dream is to become a multitude of things – an actor, model, television host, mogul, producer, director, author, writer, but I also want to have a production company as well. I want to be able to be creative inside of my own space and give the world something to see, different then what we’re already seeing.

I know you’re writing a script and working toward owning your own production company, would you be interested in a platform to be able to connect more with Barbizon alumni?

Absolutely! I would love to be able to collaborate with Barbizon grads. If ANY Barbizon alum are interested in writing, filming, producing, or just collaborating in general please reach out to me! Let’s work together and make our dreams come true!

Kameron is looking for Barbizon students/grads/alum to collaborate with!

Modeling for Children & Teens: Safety in the Industry

By: Theresa Standfast, Barbizon International

If you’ve ever thought about modeling for your child or teen, you may not know how the industry works or how to get into it. The good news is there are many success stories in the modeling industry! But like any industry, there are also bad apples looking to take advantage of others for their own gain. With the rise of social media and online platforms, it’s not always easy to know who is legitimate and who isn’t in the modeling and entertainment industry. When it comes to modeling for children and teens, parents and guardians should keep in mind safety as a top priority. There are plenty of opportunities that exist in the modeling and acting industry for children and teens that are genuine. Here are some steps you can take to keep both you and your child safe in the industry.

Know Your Child’s Online Habits

If your child or teen has an online presence in social media, be aware of what they’re posting and who they’re in communication with. Nowadays, it is fairly easy to hide behind an image or social profile posing to be someone you’re not. If your child’s social media profiles are public, all other users on the platform can view his or her profile, photos, and posts. It also means that other accounts can initiate contact with your child’s account through private messages. Sometimes legitimate agents, talent scouts, and brands search for potential models and influencers this way. Other times, the intent is malicious and people reach out posing as talent scouts and agents in attempt for money or explicit images. Talk to your child about being careful with online communication. Always do your research before communicating with anyone claiming to be an industry professional via social media.

Educate Your Child About Online Safety

Be sure to educate your child or teen about online safety including protection of personal information. Full names, phone-numbers, credit cards, and social security numbers should never be given out online. Another important safety measure to communicate with your child is to make sure he or she never agrees to meet a scout or agent outside of normal business hours or at a private residence. Nude photos from someone claiming to be a talent scout or agent are never a legitimate request. Reputable agencies will sometimes ask models to submit photos in full clothing or a swimsuit.

Always Do Your Research

When making contact with an agency or scout, always fully research the company or person first before proceeding further. Look for websites, social media accounts, and reviews from models and families that the company or individual has worked with already. Call the company’s phone number to compare the information you received online to what the staff says in office. These measures can help you vet legitimate modeling opportunities for children and those that are not.

Beware of Scam Agency Red Flags

Agents and agencies work for a commission from work booked for the model or actor who they represent. This means an agency should never charge you money upfront to represent your child or teen. (Legitimate schools such as Barbizon that offer modeling and acting training programs do charge fees, but these fees are associated with the training services offered, not representation.) Although an agency should be confident in their ability to get modeling work for your child, never sign your child with an agency that guarantees work. This is another red flag that the agency is not reputable. Also, be wary of any agency rushing you to sign a contract or else lose out on the chance of your child being a model. It is standard practice to allow at least three business days to review the contents and agreements outlined in any legal document.

Barbizon Safety Practices: Modeling for Children & Teens

When it comes to modeling for children and teens, you may also be looking for a professional training program that will equip your child with the skills and connections to be successful and safe in the modeling and acting industry. Barbizon has been developing models and actors for over 80 years now, all under the company’s guiding mission of helping young people gain confidence and develop unparalleled life skills. Personal development, confidence-building, and fostering every individual’s unique qualities in a safe, nurturing, and family-supported environment is a main focus of every Barbizon program. You can be sure your child will be safe and supported at Barbizon through the measures and features employed by our company such as:

  • Ongoing communication from staff who encourage parent/guardian involvement
  • Comprehensive training for all educational staff
  • Educational staff made up of industry professionals experienced in various aspects of the modeling and acting industry
  • Thorough vetting process of all offered industry connections and agencies to Barbizon students and alumni
  • Company accreditation and Better Business Bureau rating of A+

Now that you know the steps to take to stay safe in the industry of modeling for children and teens, you’re better equipped to avoid the harmful intent of industry scams and malicious imposters. With Barbizon, you always have a safe and professional place to get your child started in the modeling and acting industry. Just request an appointment with a Talent Director to get started!

Speakout Spotlight: An Interview with Barbizon Model Chatayana Hicks-Dixon

$

By: Meredith Bahuriak, Barbizon International

headshot of Chatayana Hicks-Dixon smilingAs the modeling, acting, and entertainment industry is working towards greater representation of diversity and inclusion, some leaps and bounds were accomplished thus far! For example, 2019 New York Fashion Week runways were the most diverse yet, with 44.8% of featured models being from minority groups. And 2020’s Emmys gave out a record number of nominations and Emmy awards to black actors.

Nevertheless, Black Americans have spoken out that there is more work to do. A recent study conducted by The National Research Group found that 2 in 3 Black Americans don’t see themselves or their culture represented in movies or television. The study also reports 83% of Black Americans believe the media portrays negative stereotypes of Black people.

As a company that firmly believes that the modeling and acting industry should represent the diversity and inclusivity of society as a whole, Barbizon models and actors come in all shapes, sizes, and styles and from different backgrounds and ethnicities. The latest to come to us in our Speakout Spotlight series is Chatayana Hicks-Dixon. Chatayana Hicks-Dixon graduated from Barbizon of Jacksonville in January 2019. The 17 year-old reached out to us about the unique struggles she faces as an African American female working in the entertainment industry. You can catch all the insight here on her Barbizon experience and her advice on how to tackle the challenges faced by African Americans in the modeling and acting industry.

body shot of Chatayana Hicks-Dixon in jumpsuitWhat were your Barbizon classes like?

My Barbizon classes were fun. I learned a lot of different ways to interview that I had not learned before and I will utilize for the rest of my life.

What is your favorite thing about Barbizon?

I really enjoy working as a spokesmodel with other Barbizon alum. I like working for Barbizon, meeting new people, talking about my Barbizon experience, and encouraging girls/boys to interview for Barbizon if they are interested.

What did you gain from your Barbizon experience?

I gained the confidence to be myself and to be more open to trying new things.

What would you say to another girl/guy your age who is struggling with their confidence?

My advice is to look in the mirror and know that you are your own portrait that you see every morning and night. Be yourself, shine through your personality, and all of your endeavors. Never utilize the word can’t in your vocabulary because you can do anything you put your mind to.

What have you been doing since graduating from Barbizon? modeling shot of Chatayana sitting down and looking serious

Aside from Barbizon and since graduating from the program, I have been focusing on school, my life coach business, and my music career. I have also been working with Barbizon Placement to address my concerns as an African American pursuing modeling and acting.

Can you tell us more about your personal challenges pursuing modeling and acting?

The biggest challenge I faced when I started modeling was the color of my skin and my hair. Being an African American, my natural hair was sometimes a problem in the industry.

modeling shot of Chatayana with an intense look and brightly colored braided hairConsidering the challenges you have already faced as an African American female, are you concerned pursuing a career in this industry is going to be more difficult for you, especially considering the current situations and cultural issues we are presently living in?

As an African American female working in the entertainment industry I believe we need more advocates to stand up for us and to talk to producers and directors so that more African Americans can make roles and not be judged by the color of their skin. For African Americans a lot of opportunities are background work and we need push for more speaking opportunities.

What’s it like to be your own advocate in the industry?

As being my own advocate in the industry I want to get my positive word out and help African-Americans strive in the acting industry. This is why I am going to college for my film-degree and I am going to open my own film company.

Creator’s Spotlight: Ali Scarlett

By Meredith Bahuriak, Barbizon International

body shot of Ali next to a quote of his about "turning pain into something good."As an organization that develops your inner “star power” so that you can shine in the world, Barbizon has grown into a large community of creators including models, actors, entertainers, and more! In honor of February being Black History Month, we’re shining our Creator’s Spotlight on one of our very own, 2018 Barbizon of Frederick grad and actor, Ali Scarlett. In addition to his many acting credits, Ali is making his own history with the publication of his first novel in September of 2020, which quickly rose to becoming a #1 best seller on Amazon!

Ali’s book The Clever Connector explores the art of networking by answering questions such as: How can I build relationships with the powerful decision-makers I need to advance my career? How can I achieve all of my goals without having to spend a single dollar? How can I attract billionaires, executives, and celebrities into my social circle when I’m broke? We reached out to Ali to learn more about his novel, career, and future endeavors. Catch some insight into his creative mind below!

What have you been doing since graduating from Barbizon?

Oh, you know. Auditioning, networking, trying to stay alive in a global pandemic…the usual :).

Congratulations on being #1 on Amazon!! How did you find yourself writing? Was writing something you were always interested in?

Thanks!Instagram Post from Ali that showcase's the cover of his book, The Clever Connector

I’ve always wanted to share my knowledge and my story with people who are where I was a few years ago—back when I was at my lowest point. I believe information is a form of power. And, I had always planned on writing a book as a way of empowering others to rise above their pain. The same pain that left me broken and on the verge of giving up.

What I did not plan on, was COVID rolling through 2020 and mixing my goals like cake batter. I wasn’t going to write that book until I was about thirty. But, faced with waking up every day, turning on the news, seeing the death count go up, and knowing I could be next, I decided to write the book now so that if anything happened to me, I could leave that book behind as a part of my legacy.

Do you foresee more books or writings in the future?

Ahaha, yea, and you’re not the first to ask me that :).

I’ve been featured in a few publications for some articles I’ve written sharing more of my knowledge. And, I was very proud to share a few of those wins on my Instagram.

As far as another big project like a whole book, yes, I have something in the works. As long as I’m alive, I’m going to continue my mission to make sure no one else has to feel the pain that I felt when I was lost, alone, and didn’t know how to go through life. So, I have another body of work in progress that I might release this year.

We are excited to have you as Model Mafia for our Barbizon Competition this year! What are you most looking forward to about the competition?

Instagram post from Ali showing him on his computer while recovering in a hospital next to a Frederich Nietzsche about the human will to endure sufferingMostly, I’m looking forward to meeting the contestants. I’m in a position now where I’ve done so much networking and met so many entertainment industry professionals, that the most exciting part of Model Mafia would have to be seeing other people who are chasing their own goals and dreams. It’s always inspiring to be in an environment where people are going to be judged, they know they’re going to be judged, they’re most likely nervous, anxious, or afraid, yet they show up to that difficult situation anyway with every intention to do their best. I love that because win or lose, that’s something we can all do. We can all show up to the difficult situations in our own lives and do our best.

So, to see a massive amount of people who are all willing to face their own toughest mental barriers in an effort to achieve the dreams they hold closest to their heart is going to be a real treat. For me, this is going to be like watching the Olympics :D.

What are your goals this year?

Well, I think every man should have a little bit of mystery, but I can tell you this. I recently connected with a New York Times bestselling author who owns his own multimillion-dollar business that he built around the success of his own book. And, I’m grateful that he has agreed to mentor me to build a business around the success of my book.

What Barbizon advice do you have for anyone pursuing a career in the arts/entertainment industry?

Remember the three levels of success:Instagram post from Ali with a screen grab from a published online article her wrote on the topic of Success Advice

(1) It’s what you know: In this case, acting.

(2) It’s not what you know, it’s who you know: directors, producers, casting directors, showrunners, and so on.

(3) It’s not who you know, it’s who knows you: Having a brand and some popularity so that industry professionals call you for roles.

All of these can be worked on right now. You can work on your acting, your networking, your brand, and your popularity (that last one is one of the benefits of living in the digital age).

And, conveniently, this is one of the perks of the Barbizon Competition. It hits all three levels, even going so far as to put you in a position where judges call you (with callbacks) for roles so long as you’re memorable.

So, be memorable on stage. That’s going to be what separates you from the competition.

I really like Will Smith, his speeches have helped me through a lot. He is an amazing actor and has lots of wisdom that I admire!

Who is your celebrity crush?

My celebrity crush is definitely Martin Henderson. He plays Jack on the Netflix show Virgin River

How would you describe your personal style and where do you get fashion inspiration from?

Kaesyn posing on a brick street in a ruffled black dressI would describe my personal style as diverse. I love styling oversized graphic tees with a pair of ripped jeans and some sick sneakers. But I also love anything bright colored paired with a ruffled skirt and a pair of booties.

What’s everyday life like in your home town of North Manchester, Indiana?

Living in a small town like North Manchester, everyday is pretty much the same. I enjoy getting ice cream after school some days or going to the nearest Starbucks for a treat!

If you could go one place in the world, where would it be?

If I could go one place in the world, I would go to Greece. It’s been my dream since I was in 4th grade to visit, and I’m hoping I get to check it off my bucket list at some point!

Creator’s Spotlight: Yemi Sekoni

By Meredith Bahuriak, Barbizon International

Of Jamaican and Nigerian descent, Yemi Sekoni is someone to celebrate this Black History Month as an outstanding woman who wears many hats in the fashion, modeling, and entertainment industry! Latching onto the industry at a young age on the performing and modeling side, she’s now expanded into the production and business world, and she’s here to share with us what it’s like to be in the creator’s seat of the modeling industry! Catch more on her journey and her insight on diversity in the industry as the Founder & Creative Director at Rhode Island Fashion Week *, President/Creative Director at Lights Fashion Philanthropy **, and Owner/Director at Donahue Models & Talent ***.

How did you get your start in the fashion and entertainment industry?

I discovered my passion for performing at the young age of seven when my class staged a short reenactment of “The Sound of Music” for the school. The bug caught on and throughout my high school years, I took to pestering the school principal for permission to perform at every event. During my four years in college in Nigeria, obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, my passions kept me actively participating in theater productions for the Drama Department, and performing with the college band.

Being equipped with my bachelor’s Degree in Education, a Post-Graduate diploma in Marketing, and an MBA, has prepared me for a career in banking, relationship management, event planning, and management. With over 40 years’ experience in various areas of the entertainment industry, including theater, TV, film, print and runway, I continued to work on stage and ventured into television, appearing on a number of TV dramas and becoming a regular cast member on a critically acclaimed soap opera at the time.

You bought Donahue Models & Talent in 2010, can you tell us why you bought the agency and what you’re looking to do with it? Yemi modeling in a brown cocktail dress in different poses

To be honest, I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. I used to be a model for the agency at the time. When I moved to the states from the UK I was looking to get into the industry here, and one thing led to another and I ended up signing with Donahue. Then, she started to mentor me because she had been looking for someone to take it because she was ready to retire.

When the time came, she called me up on the phone one day and was like, “Listen kid I want to retire and I’m looking for someone who can take over my legacy.” And I thought, you know, this is quite the opportunity. If I don’t do this I may spend the rest of my life wondering, “What if?”

I had no idea what to do, but the first thing I did was call the small business administration, had a mentor, they walked me through building my business plan, about financing, it took me about 18 months to figure it out, but thankfully I was able to.

One of the hard parts was stepping out from being just another model to then becoming a business owner and being perceived slightly differently.

What I’ve done from there is to build off of it so we are not just an agency any longer. We produce Rhode Island Fashion Week, we produce a fashion and beauty expo twice a year, and I’m also working with fashion designers providing educational business services and consulting for them to help them grow their brand. So, we’ve really become multifaceted over the nine years.

Yemi on set of a photoshoot working with young modelsHow have you dealt with diversity in your business this past year?

Rhode Island, we’re not what you call a ‘high fashion’ state. You’re not getting the Victoria’s Secret client. But what we do have is a lot of commercial work, looking for the homegrown person next door.

There’s a lot of diversity in the audience sitting at home watching TV, and sometimes, we do get asked for racial ‘ambiguity’ when it comes to models. And diversity has extended to clients looking for people with visible disabilities — people watching TV like anyone else.

No two jobs are the same. Even when a client doesn’t ask specifically, I just look across the board [of who I have] to suggest talent, and it’s often a wide array of people. Sometimes they’re not asking for specifics but know what they want to feature when they see [models.]

I pride myself on the fact that my agency was the first in the state to provide a biracial couple. [The husband] ended up being a darker toned Hispanic gentleman — this was for Iggy’s Doughboys. When I’m suggesting talent, I’m looking for everything across the board.

There’s a merging of lines between different cultures, and the differences are going to be fewer and fewer. For the younger generation, the lines are blurrier. They don’t understand what the big deal is, whether it be skin color, or sexual orientation — so we need to be more progressive, and make it less of an issue.

Any advice for those pursuing a career in the fashion/entertainment industry?Yemi looking professional in a seated model's pose on a white couch

Here are five things to do to keep your head in the game.

-Analyze the situation

-Assess your possible solutions

-Seek advice from people you admire

-Don’t be afraid to change direction

At a time when socializing is forbidden, shops, gyms, and restaurants are operating under various restrictions, and we are confined to our homes – for those of us who have it, work has taken on ever more heightened importance. With little else to do, particularly by way of leisure time, work has become a lifeline, providing us with a sense of meaning and normality.
